Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her maternal grandparents and mother. As a child Ford was diagnosed with an obsessive-compulsive disorder that caused anxiety due to word associations. Ford began acting during her teens, and was a member of the National Youth Theatre. After being admitted to Sylvia Young Theatre School for a short time but Ford realized it was not the right venue for her. Ford decided to apply for admission to Central School of Speech and Drama and winning a placement after her third try made an application and secured a place at Central School of Speech and Drama. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler, a regular character on Doctor Who. Ford graduated in 1993. However, prior to that, Ford made a television debut, appearing on Surgical Spirit in an episode in the year 1991. Ford took the professional name Catherine Tate. Tate began her TV debut in 1991and appeared on shows like The Bill. Men Behaving Badly. as well as London's Burning. The stage was her main focus, and joined the company's season 2000-2001. Tate was soon recognized for her stand-up comedy, that were added to her repertoire in 1996.
